Experience Working with Psychiatric Patients:
Including my years in residency and fellowship training, I have
approximately 21 years of experience as a physician working with
persons who have neurological and mental illnesses.
Experience Working in Research:
The first clinical trial in which I participated was a university-supported protocol for the use of valproic acid in treating bipolar disorder in 1989. I subsequently worked on two other studies as a sub-investigator and principal investigator before leaving residency at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. While at the National Institutes of Mental Health, I worked on a number of ongoing NIMH intramural protocols, particularly those focused on the use of quantitative EEG and positron-emission tomography to better describe the neurophysiology of bipolar disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and panic disorder. I was also involved in protocols looking at the use of carbamazepine in treating these disorders. In addition to being supervised by Robert M. Post, M.D. on the NIMH studies, I also worked for the Institute of Behavior and Health in Rockville, Maryland, as a sub-investigator under the direction of Robert DuPont, M.D., on several depression and anxiety protocols. As an associate professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, I worked on projects focused on posttraumatic stress disorder.
Since 1994, as the principal investigator for Community Clinical
Research, I have participated in over 250 studies of investigational
medications for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders,
depression, insomnia, addictions, and Tourette's syndrome. I have
also worked as a consultant to various contract research organizations
and pharmaceutical companies. I earned a B.A. in Biology from St.
Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, and an M.D. at the University
of Texas Medical School at Houston. I completed residency training
at Hermann Hospital and the Harris County Psychiatric Center in
Houston, Texas. I participated in a fellowship for biological psychiatry
at the National Institutes of Mental Health in Rockville, Maryland.
I have been Board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry
and Neurology since 1993, and licensed by the State of Texas as
a physician since 1987. I maintain my Advanced Critical Life Support
certification.
